Wairimu Gatemba (b.1991) is a multidisciplinary conceptual artist that address “ the nuances of the in-between” particularly in transitional periods. Her visual works explore concepts in series of 3, that reflect a vignette of a theme and the collective narrative of her work. The morphing of self through life, shaped by movement and belonging inspire her efforts to articulate the points of transition of an anticipated path of life. Physically, mentally and spiritually, we align or diverge from norms which inform who we are and become.
These observed notions of truths influenced by our mobility across culture, economies, literacy, societies and internal investigations present a personhood of contradictions and affirmation. Using mixed media, she layers a select choice of colors of paint, ink, and pastels with fabrics, mirrors and other found objects she visually narrates the innate moments of these defining transitions.
She has works in private collections from 2011, with her transition into publicly showing her art in 2023 at Gallery992, Atlanta in a duo exhibit. Her work has been featured in the 2024 April Issue of the GMARO magazine. She has written and directed a theatrical piece showcased at Akaz! Gallery, in collaboration and moderation of an artist talk for Chika Unigwe’s “The Middle Daughter” 2023 in Atlanta. She was the Barbara Molette Dramaturg Scholar 2023- 2024 under the Working Title Playwrights based in Atlanta.
